Behind the scenes

Behind most of my paintings there is a LONG process. In my watercolours I use a technique called glazing a lot. I often Iayer as many as 50-100 washes of very diluted colour (or ink) in one painting. Though it is laborious it gives the painting a very special depth. Lately I have started to combine the watercolours with gouache to give some of my paintings a bit of variation in style.

I am the kind of person that gets bored if I am doing the same thing all the time though, so I love to change my mediums, and I Iove to mix them. I started with watercolour in 2021, then went to soft pastel and pastel pencils, then it was oil pastels, then gouache, coloured pencils, inks, and on and on it goes. Currently I am trying out monoprinting and having a lot of fun with that!

I wanted to share some photos of old sketches and paintings at various stages, to show a bit of my process. These are from the last 5 years, more or less.

It’s not in chronological order, and some of it is pretty old because I used to take a lot more process pictures before (so now all my storage is full). Some of it are just doodles and faffing about whilst some of them are “proper” paintings and studies in process.

But if you think this kind of stuff is fun to see then you are very welcome to have a look!
