I consider my paintings of animals portraits as well. Whether it's a wild elephant baby, a spoilt pup or a human, the challenge and reward in capturing their personality and expression is the same. It's a real joy to try to capture their spirit!

On some of my newer paintings I have been experimenting with shimmering mica watercolours (subtle and luminous, never glittery!), and it is a lot of fun. Because this delicate sheen doesn't get fully captured on a flat photo or scans, it will only be visible on the original painting, and not all the time, it comes alive depending on how the light hits the original painting.
